E-books and Light Novel Apps

Now for the past two weeks I have been trying to get my schedule in order and have tried to read whilst I have been on the train going to uni. some apps I have dowloaded are easier to use than others but here is my analysis of the good the bad and the down trodden ugly. So if anyone would like to read on the go and have a hassle free experience here are some apps I’d recommend trying.

  1. The first app I’d love to recommend if you have a kindle, android or iPhone is the Kindel App.

For those who are little more tech-wary and prefer to have the physical book infant of them I’d suggest trying this app out. It’s perfect for those who don’t want to have to carry an extra book or two in their bag. It’s also brilliant for those who want to read something new but do not want to be invested in buying the doubled in price physical copy.

Pro’s: An easy user face for simple reading without the fuss, settings to change background, font and text size, it also had a brilliant bookmark tab which made things easy to save incase I wanted to go to a different book altogether. There was also a handy failsafe of saving the page you were on incase you accidentally left the app.

Con’s: Being unable to purchase a book on the app and having to log onto an amazon account.

2. Novel Full was a great app for those who want the upcoming and the popular novels avaliable on the web. Free to use and you don’t need to buy anything before hand! No membership and no upfront fee. Anyone who loves Chinese Novels more this may also be the app for you to use too. Avaliable for Android and iPhone Users.

Just like the Kindle app there was plenty of material available and easy to book mark.

Pro’s: Easy to use, great at adding to your library and lastly but most importantly it’s FFFRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³ so if there is anyone out there who just loves the idea of being a little cheap and doesn’t want to pay a couple of Pounds to buy the e-book here is a brilliant resource for you.

Con’s: Difficult to find books that have multiple genres I.E. Slice of life and Mecha for instance, it was also difficult to find many Japanese books unless you scrolled a bit more to the bottom.

EDIT: I have only found out recently that this app will only work if connected to WI-FI so it isn’t very good if you want to go out and about.

3. LN-Reader was a great app if you wanted a specific novel that has been completed series and wanted it all in one place, with no need to pay any extra for buying the books. All of them have been formatted into a PDF text version. Think of Baka-Tsuki but in an app. ONLY works with IPHONE users.

I have to say that whilst this wasn’t easy to read with at first I’ve developed a habit of wanting to look at this app first just incase the other apps on my phone do not have the book I’m looking for. If I was to look for a more popular book series like Antihero or World No Dance Break then this is the place to go.

Pro’s: All the titles available are available in PDF format and easy to read (direct translations), they are free to read and doesn’t need anything to be purchased before hand.

Con’s: A short list compared to the other apps I’ve been using and seems to be lacking in some of the updates on some of the books.

4. Now onto the last item on my list for today is J-novel. So if anyone wishes to spend some Christmas or birthday money on this app then try it. For about $4.50 a month you could have access to a forum discussing the latest updates and about 40 pages worth of each release for the week, over multiple series so you aren’t just stuck to reading 40 pages on one book.

Pro’s: Currently updating Japanese Novels coming out so you won’t be missing any new content coming out from the Island on the opposite side of the world. There are plenty of Novels on the website including ones that you might think are a little more obscure. You will have an advantage or partaking in the community and also having plenty of content to read just incase you’re a fast reader.

Con’s: It costs money and if you really want to have unlimited access then you need to pay $10 a month for the premium access, if you aren’t obsessed with anime or light novels then this is a good way to spend your money wisely.

The Rising of the Shield Hero (Light Novel 1)

I started this series when I was trying to find content on Novel Updates, which if you haven’t yet seen here’s a link. I wanted another Harem light novel or Anime I could spend good quality time on. After searching and searching for something that would give me some reading material that would last longer than three days, I stumbled on this series.

The story starts off with Naomi Iwatani, a very “normal” otaku in the library. He reads a book about the Four Legendary Heroes who are summoned to a world and they obviously protect it. After being summoned, with the help of one weird ass magic book, he and three other boys are told about their new please-save-our-world fate. The new legendary Heroes are told they need train and become powerful enough to get rid of the darkness plaguing the world.

Naofumi being the absolute god of luck that he is, gets left alone, sabotaged and betrayed by people he thinks are his friends. Plagued with anger he sets about not helping anyone and then finds out he can purchase slaves and in comes an incredibly cute beastmen raccoon-hybrid-thing. A/N: her tail is FLUFFFFFYYYYYY!

Now the story goes pretty normal and is very uninteresting if you ask me and I was beginning to doubt the book and why it had more in the series. It was the next chapter that made me realise that judging too quickly is a bad idea. The flavourful and rather anger inducing next chapter made me read on and on and on. I don’t think I stopped reading until some justice had been served. (It does pleasantly come along but give the book a chance to breath)

The characters were all well thought out and both Naofumi and Raphtalia, the raccoon, are so darn adorable that I honest to god am fanboying on the other side of the screen right now >_<. Poo to anyone who dares to tell me otherwise. They all had clear, if slightly predictable, motives. They were clearly thought out and everything meshes. To put bluntly I love the characters.

The story in its entirety has great pace, but those of you who wish to read a light novel with more pace and less “filler” probably might need to wait for a later post or you could check out this post here.

Hope this made up slightly or my lack of posting if not well….I shall clearly have to see you on the dark side πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚.

My lazy Ass and An Update

So I’m pretty sure I started this blog about seven months ago and conveniently decided I wasn’t going to write again until I had got some basics of writing under my belt. My university degree has taught me lots and I’m still in the process of learning.

So the update on publications on my blog will be once per week, if I need to get ahead of myself on reading to give you the content you want it’ll be longer. I have set deadlines for myself this year so I can keep up with all these posts needing to be uploaded. Progress will be slow and I want to make sure that the content I am giving you, is both accurate and personality filled.

Please be kind to me, as lazy blogger over here has two jobs as well as being in my second year of University.

Sword Art Online Progressive (Volume 1)

I am a huge fan of the SAO series, Sword Art Online for those who are unsure, which is about Kirito a Solo player who is trapped inside a virtual reality game along with 10,000 other people. The anime as well as the first light novel volume, details how Kirito and the surviving players make their way up towards level 100 in order to defeat the death game they are stuck in.

Having watched the first two seasons eagerly I wanted more content because my appetite wasn’t even remotely quenched. I bumbled my way through Amazon and below and behold I found that Reki Kawahara (Author-san) had in fact been publishing new content for SAO. Reading the blurb and thinking brilliant material will be within my clutches by the end of the week, I haven’t been disappointed.

The progressive series takes the reader right back to the very beginning. Where everything started and got turned into an absolute pile of poo. It shows the reader how Kirito and the others around him are stuck inside a virtual game and what the dynamics are with the other players.

What we don’t get to see in the Anime or the original light novels is how Asuna and Kirito develop as characters but also how their relationship develops. Many people in the SAO fandom will more than likely want to read how each floor boss was defeated and what journey the duo went on. The anime briefly touches on this but I want to know all the details with nothing being skipped out.

Kawahara has said that the progressive series will cover a boss or two in each book and there are going to be 100 floors, all with their own plot line and character development. A lot of work for Author-san but do not despair because the rate in which he works is going to be roughly one book every year hopefully!

For anyone wishing to watch the SAO series the best website to use is Watchcartoonsonline.tv or if you don’t mind the large ad breaks Crunchyroll is also high quality as well as clear audio. If you wish to read the translated version of the SAO Light novel series you can do so here.

I’m hoping this was what everyone expected the critic to be if it wasn’t feedback would be greatly appreciated so until next time, I hope everyone has a brilliant and fun filled week!

Hello!

So you’ve found your way to my blog and I just want to give a big thanking you very muchly for getting this deep into the internet. (Yes I am aware I spelt much wrong)

You are probably sat somewhere wondering:

‘What on Earth am I going to be reading on here?’

Well the boring answer would go: A wonderful dive into my mind…..which is exciting in itself but doesn’t even convey my personality so we shall try that again!

The mystical, magical, sometimes tragical and hopelessly pointless rambling blog of yours truly.Β That sounds a lot better if I do say so myself.

So considering this is my first post out into the big wide expanse on the internet I thought it would be good idea to say there will be posts up twice a week, unless life decides that I need to adult and traps me in a dungeon. I will try to post on Saturday’s and Sunday’s or maybe Wednesdays and Mondays…but then again I could also just randomly choose a day and keep you all on your toes.

Most of the content on here will be about all of the translations of Japanese light novels but depending on how I feel I may include other areas that I want to talk about too. I haven’t really put much of a topic on this blog as it’s really just for me. If you enjoy reading this little blog of mine then I humbly thank you for your generosity in reading.

I’m hoping this will be a fun and chilled blog to read and if I manage to make you all smile and laugh then I consider my writing a job well done!

This post is probably a bit too long now so for now I will log out and hope anyone who visits has an exciting and fun filled week until next time!
